Masida SoppuSaaru / Mashed Assorted Green Leaves Curry

Hi All, wanted to share one of the healthiest recipes Masida Soppu Saaru meaning Mashed Green Leaves Curry.This is very popular in rural part of karnataka that to especially among
community called Vokkaliga.This curry is in its healthiest form as many assorted green leafy vegetables will be used along with toor dal.I cook this curry  quite often to get benefited with nutritious values of various green leafy vegetables. After having junk food,i'll prefer to eat this following day just to ensure that atleast i get some nutritious food.And it also very easy to make kids eat green leafy vegetables,as it will be in the form of curry and the'll never get to know that so many leafy vegetables are used!

Methi Leaves/Fenugreek Leaves:1 Bunch
Dil Leaves:1 Bunch
Palak:1 Large Bunch
Coriander leaves:1/4 cup(optional)
Toor dal:1/2 Cup
Onion:1 Big 
Tomatoes:1 -2
Green Chilly:3-4
Garlic:6 Cloves
Fresh Coconut Grated:1/2 Cup(optional)
Tamarind:1/2 Tsp
Curry Powder:2 Tbsp
Salt To Taste
For seasoning:
Oil:2-3 Tsp
Mustard Seeds:1/2 Tsp
Curry leaves:2 Sprig
Dry Red Chilly:2 Broken
Asafoetida:small pinch
Onion:Quartered and crushed
Garlic:3 Cloves

Wash toor dal and all leafy vegetables.Take a pressure cooker,add toor dal,onion, 6 cloves of garlic,tomatoes,green chilly and all greens.Add 1 cup of water and pressure cook for a whistle.

Once pressure is released on its own,drain the water and keep it aside.Put all the aboved cooked greens and dal into a mixer/processor,and just on the mixer for just 3-5 seconds.So that everything gets mixed well.

In a small mixer jar,add fresh coconut,tamarind,curry powder and grind to a very smooth paste by adding little water.

Take a pan,heat oil,add mustard seeds once it splutters add all the seasoning ingredients listed above in order.Fry Onion and garlic for a 2 minutes,add the above grounded coconut paste fry well till oil leaves the corners.

For this add cooked and mashed greens,mix well.Add drained water and also about 3 cups of water,add salt to taste. Once it starts to boil,turn off the heat.

Masida soppu saru will be ready to serve .You can have this curry along with Ragi Balls,Rice or Dosa.

My Notes:

  • If you are not using coconut,then soak tamarind in water,extract the juice out of it for this mix curry powder and add it after adding mashed greens.
  • You can use any assorted Green leafy vegetables of your choice except gongura and Nuggesoppu/Drumstick leaves.If you add more greens,then adjust curry powder accordingly.

    Curry powder is sambar powder. If you understand kannada then it is even called Belesaaru pudi in kannada. Do reply me how garlic Naan turned out.
