Sabut Masoor Dal Rice is simple lunch box recipe that tastes delicious and delivers complete protein. Cook Sabut Masoor Dal along with rice and unique masala of dry coconut,curry leaves , garlic , red chilly and other spices. It’s easy to make with regular ingredients from our kitchen. Also this is a one pot recipe ,which makes easier to make during rush morning hours. Importance of one pot recipe is well understood during morning hours only when all the gas burners are lit along with my microwave oven too 🙂

Sabut Masoor Dal Rice

Needless to say , me being a South Indian , Rice is a staple food and I try to make different rice variety for lunch boxes. Main idea for creating this for recipe for lunch box is to provide complete protein in one plate. Sabut Masoor Dal Rice recipe is my own creation , as carrying 3-4 boxes would not be feasible to meet the balanced diet . So Sabut masoor dal rice is easy to pack along with some salad and vegetable portion.

Few more rice varieties for lunch box are : Tomato Bath , Vegetable Bath , Moong Dal Rice , Masala Lemon Rice and Puliyogare.

This recipe is light on stomach and can have it for evening tea also. Basic idea of having a proper healthy tiffin during evening is , it leaves you for light dinner . Which in turn is beneficial for staying healthy.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 Cup Sabut Masoor Dal
  • 250 grams Raw Rice
  • 2 Tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 no Onion , medium size , chopped
  • 1 no green chilli , chopped
  • 1 no Tomato , large chopped
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander Leaves for garnishing
  • 1/4 Tsp Hing / Asafoetida
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 Tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Jaggery
  • 11/2 Tsp Salt or as required
  • 1 3/4 cups Water for cooking
For Blending Masala
  • 3 Tbsp Dry Coconut grated
  • 3-4 no's Garlic clove , medium size
  • 4 sprigs Curry leaves
  • 1/2 Tsp Tamarind , firmly pressed
  • 1 Tsp Jeera / Cumin Seeds
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander Leaves
Instructions
  1. Take 1/2 Cup of Masoor dal and 11/4 Cup of rice , rinse  and wash well for couple of times.

  2. Soak Masoor Dal and Rice in water for 10-15 minutes.Drain and keep it aside.

  3. Whilst , prepare the masala by blending 2-3 Tbsp of dry Coconut , 1/2 Tbsp of Tamarind, 1 Tsp of jeera/cumin seeds , 3 sprigs of curry leaves , 2 Tbsp of coriander leaves and blend to a coarse paste without adding water.

  4. Heat 2 Tbsp of Oil in a pressure pan , add finely chopped onions and 1 chopped green chilli , fry well .Add in chopped tomatoes.

  5. Now add 1/4 Tsp of Hing/ Asafoetida ,1/2 Tsp of Turmeric powder , 1 Tsp of red chilli powder, 1/2 Tsp jaggery powder ,mix well and cook till oil starts to release from the edges.

  6. Add blended masala and mix well , continue to cook for 3-4 minutes , till raw smell goes off.

  7. Now add masoor dal and rice and cook on high flame for 2 minutes.

  8. Add 1 3/4 cups of water ( preferable hot water) , salt to taste .

  9. Pressure cook for 1 whistle ,turn of the flame.Allow pressure to settle down on its own.

  10. Open the lid and add 1-2 Tbsp of chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

  11. Serve hot with carrot raita or Curd with tempering.

Step by Step Directions on making of Sabut Masoor Dal Rice:

Take 1/2 Cup of Masoor dal and 11/4 Cup of rice , rinse  and wash well for couple of times.

Add blended masala and mix well , continue to cook for 3-4 minutes , till raw smell goes off.
