Makar Sankranti / Makara Sankranthi / Maghi is celebrated all over Indian with different regional names such as Pongal , Bihu and Lohri. It is a multi cultural festival which is celebrated with lot of festivity and joy throughout the country.

Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into the Zodiac sign of Makara rashi ( capricorn) on its celestial path. This festival is dedicated to diety Sun ( Suryadeva) . It marks the end of winter and beginning of spring in India. For farmers , it is a harvest festival.

Regional Celebrations

In Karnataka , girls wear traditional new clothes and exchange “Ellu -Bella- Sakkare Acchu” ( Mixture of Sesame seeds, jaggery , peanuts , dry coconut and sugar candies) with friends and family . Also in villages cows and bulls are decorated with colourful costumes and taken on procession.

Day preceding Sankranti is called Bhogi . At dawn , bonfire is lit with logs of woods and discard old and derelict things and concentrate on new things causing changes or transformations.

In Tamilnadu its Pongal and celebrations include , decorating house with beautiful kolam ( Rangoli) , sweet preparations and offerings to GOD. Ven pongal and sakkarai pongal are must for feast celebrations.

In Maharashtra also it is exchange of tilgul ladoo as a token of goodwill and wish each other with words ” til -gul ghyaa aani goad goad bola” meaning accept this til gul and utter sweet words. Married women invites family / friends for Haldi Kumkum and exchange sweets and small gifts.

Lohri in Punjab is celebrated with song, dance, sugarcanes around bonfire . Also in few places of North India , flying kites on Uttarayan is considered to be very auspicious.

In East ,Assamese and Bengal , its Bihu and celebrated with song and dance with a a delectable dessert payesh .

When its celebrations , food and preparations of special dishes comes first during festivals. Hence I have made a collection of Sankranti Recipes to celebrate the festival in a perfect way .
