I wish all of you a very happy Ugadi / Gudipadwa. Ugadi is the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra. The word Ugadi is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘yuga’ (age) and ‘adi’ (beginning) which means “the beginning of the new age”. Ugadi or New Year’s Day for Hindus is celebrated in the states of Karnataka , Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. People of Maharashtra celebrate the day as Gudi Padwai that marks the arrival of Spring and reaping of rabi crops. People celebrate the festival with various rituals and traditions.
“Bevu Bella ” is eaten on this day as a must-have food. Bevu is Neem which significes bitter and Bella is Jaggery means sweet . People either have jaggery and neem together or make Ugadi pachdi along with other four ingredients. Ugadi pachdi is a coarse paste made of jaggery, neem, raw mango, pepper, salt and tamarind juice .
The ingredients of Bevu Bella are of 6 different tastes. Each of these tastes symbolize the ups and downs of your life. It signifies that New Year bring new days ; however, human life is full of these six emotions that show us the right path of life. Hence start of the New Year is celebrated by having Bevu Bella / Ugadi Pachadi.
Once after Bevu Bella there comes myriad of dishes for the festival. Indian festivals and celebrations are incomplete without sweets and delicious menu . Here are my few recipe collections for Ugadi festival.
