Moong Dal Kaskas Payasam is a delicious and a healthy dessert made with moong dal , poppy seeds , coconut and jaggery. Payasa or Payasam is a semi liquid dessert made with Jaggery . Payasa/Payasam is also referred as a South Indian Kheer made with Jaggery. As per my understanding , for Payasam, Jaggery is used as sweetner and not Sugar. Though many varieties of Payasam are done , this one is my all time favourite.

Memories: Moong Dal Kaskas Payasam is a part of celebrations during Sankranti festival . At my home , Mom used to prepare this on Saturday's during Shravan Masa . As during Shravana masa , every saturday mom used to make some delicious sweets. Saturday's were half day at school and as soon as we were back from school , we used to get really delicious food at home , Nostalgic .

Benefits : Yellow split moong dal is easy to digest , nutritious and light on stomach . Adding Roasted Poppy seeds and raw rice to Payasam , improves the texture and flavour of the desert . Also adding jaggery as sweetner , keep us warm. Addition of Poppy Seeds , makes you to get a good sound sleep. So next time for lack of sleep , try adding poppy seeds in your food as it improves the quality , duration and tranquility of sleep.
