Mathura Peda Recipe with step by step photos and video. Mathura Peda is a a classic Indian sweet made with milk solids and sugar. As this peda is orginated from Mathura ( Sri Krishna’s Birth Place) , it is named after this place. Hence Mathura Pede is one of the main offering to Lord Krishna.

What is Mathura Peda?

Mathura is a town in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. And is famous for sweets made from mawa / milk solids which is extremely delicious peda.

The traditional way of making peda is tedious , whole milk is boiled for hours to condense futher to get mawa/ milk solids . Then solids are mixed with bora ( fine powdered sugar), flavoured with cardamom and shaped into peda. Mathura Pede are also rolled in some sugar once done.

This post shares a simpler version of making Mathura Peda with khoya . I made peda with store brought mawa , but you can also make it in a traditional way. You can refer this post on how to make home made mawa/ khoya and follow this recipe to make Mathura pede.

Ingredients 

  • 200 grams Khoya / Mawa/ Milk Solids
  • 1/3 Cup Sugar
  • 4-5 Green Cardamom - dehusked
  • 1.5 Tsp Milk - optional
  • ½ Tbsp Pistachios - chopped ,optional for garnishing

Instructions

  • Take 1/3 cup of granulated sugar and 4-5 green cardamom pods de-husked , in a mixer or blender.
  • Blend to a very fine and smooth powder and set aside till use.
  • Grate 200 to 250 grms of mawa /khoya , approximately you get around 2 cups .
  • In a heavy bottom pan , add grated mawa and start to fry on a low flame.
  • Fry till mawa changes colour to deep brown , it takes around 15-20 minutes on low flame.
  • If mawa/milk solids is not fresh then it may dry out soon , if it looks dry then add 1 tbsp of milk .
  • Turn of the heat and keep fried mawa aside.
  • Add 1/3 cup of powdered sugar( or more as per taste) , cardamom powder and mix well.
  • At this you can also blend the mixture in blender or mixer jar to get smooth texture.
  • Now grease hands with ghee/ clarified butter and shape the mixture into peda.
  • Roll in sugar powder , garnish with nuts and serve.

Step by Step Directions to make Mathura Peda

Take 1/3 cup of granulated sugar , 4-5  green cardamom pods de husked in a mixer or blender.

Blend to a very fine and smooth powder and set aside till use.

Grate 200 to 250 grms of mawa /khoya , approximately you get around 2 cups . In a heavy bottom pan , add grated mawa

and start to fry on a low flame.

Fry till mawa changes colour to deep brown , it takes around 15-20 minutes on low flame.

If mawa/milk solids is not fresh then it may dry out soon , if it looks dry then add 1 tbsp of milk . Turn of the heat and keep fried mawa aside.

Add 1/3 cup of powdered sugar( or more as per taste) , cardamom powder and mix well.

At this step you can also blend the mixture in blender or mixer jar to get smooth texture or can mix with hands .

If mixture is too dry then add 1/2 Tbsp of milk and mix well to get smooth mathura peda.

Now grease hands with ghee/ clarified butter and shape the mixture into mathura peda. To shape make a ball and flatten with hands and gently thumb press at the center.

Repeat the same procedure to shape all peda’s
