Turmeric Milk aka Turmeric Latte / Golden milk is a ancient Indian milk . We call turmeric milk as Haldi Doodh in India and it's a compulsory bed time drink to many of us. Though it's consumed throughout the year , it's most popular during winter season. When consumed regularly ,Turmeric Milk is known to Boost Immunity .
It's a good old known home remedy for cold, cough , common flu and sleeplessness. Drinking turmeric milk before bed helps to get good quality sleep.
I add Turmeric milk in our family diet during seasonal transitions and also in winter season . This prevents us from catching common flu. Even if dinner is skipped , you can drink this milk, as it's a complete meal on its own .
Though few prepares golden milk with milk and turmeric powder . According to ayurvedic preparations , along with turmeric , black pepper powder and ghee are used.

You need few basic spices for flavors and just 4 main ingredients to make this immunity boosting , healthy golden milk recipe.
To make this wonderful and tasty golden milk all you need is Whole Milk . You can either use full cream milk or skimmed milk, its up to your choice.
Organic Turmeric powder is what you need to use . If you don't have organic turmeric powder you can also grate some fresh turmeric root to make this golden latte .
Blackpepper powder is important for absorbing curcumin from turmeric. Black pepper contains piperine, this enhances curcumin absorption in the body by up to 2,000%, combining the spices magnifies their effects. Hence it's recommended to add blackpepper where ever turmeric is used.
Ghee / Clarified butter , ayurvedic preparation calls for fat , either ghee from cow's milk or cold pressed almond oil or coconut oil to make this haldi doodh. Because it helps in digestion , curing sore throat -if any ; and also helps in boosting immunity.
Other spices - cardamom and cinnamon are used to flavor the milk , you can skip if you wish. But adding it enhances taste of this healthy bed time drink.
Sweetener - though I prefer drinking haldi doodh without adding any sweetener, you may add honey as per your taste , if required.
To make it vegan , you can use either coconut milk or almond milk instead of cow's milk. If using any vegan milk to make turmeric milk, then heat turmeric powder in ¼ cup of water and then add it coconut / almond milk.
Heating turmeric powder / turmeric root is important for absorbing its nutrition.
Also , you can replace ghee with either coconut or almond oil.
For variations in flavors and other health benefits like joints pain , you can add extra spices like nutmeg powder along with cinnamon and cardamom powder. Also ginger and cloves can also be used for more intense spiced flavors.
Is it necessary to drink turmeric milk only at bed time ? No , though its beneficial for getting good sleep at night , You can drink this on any time.
Can I drink this everyday ? Yes, you can drink this milk everyday irrespective of season.
Can I make this with skimmed milk ? Yes , you can use skimmed milk . And also you can use water along with milk to make this turmeric milk.
How to make golden turmeric milk?
In a sauce pan boil 1 cup of whole milk .
When milk boils completely add turmeric powder , black pepper powder , cinnamon and cardamom pods.
When everything boils and froths up , turn off the stove and set sauce pan aside .
Let milk warms down , strain milk with a strainer.
Now add ghee and honey , stir well everything.
Serve/ sip warm before bed time.
